z170 (12月21日）　「知力・考え」に関する慣用句(8) come in out of the rain 「分別がある，現実を直視する」 直訳：　雨が降っている外から中に入って来る 例文：  Stop singing "Singin' In the Rain" outside in the rain. You don't know enough to come in out of the rain. 雨が降っている外で『雨に唄えば』なんて歌うのはやめなさい。　あなたは本当に愚か者なんだから。 come in out of the rain は「雨を避けて家の中に入る」ということ。　状況によっては「雨宿りする=　take shelter (from the rain);　wait out the rain」と訳してもよいでしょう。 　 「分別がある」という意味では単独で使うこともありますが　know enough to come in out of the rain; 　be sensible enough to come in out of the rain;  have enough sense to come in out of the rain のように「分別がある」という意味合いの動詞・形容詞・名詞とともに使うことも多いようです。　 Fools have wit enough to come in out of the rain 「馬鹿でも雨を避けて家の中に入るだけの才覚があるものだ」という16世紀の諺があることから見ると古い慣用句と思われます。
